To a better world, a brighter future: Social Contributions from HCE

The era of companies striving for maximum profits is over. It has become a consensus among people nowadays that a corporation should strive for both its profits and that of the society in which it operates. Hyundai Construction Equipment recognizes the social obligation that the company bears and is working for the good of the society, based on its business philosophy of “severance to the country and the society.” Let us look into what HCE is doing to make our society a better place to live.

The Company System for Social Contribution

In 2019, Hyundai Construction Equipment came up with a new vision for our social contribution efforts, “A better world, a better future.” To make our society a better place to live, HCE is putting efforts into taking care of the underprivileged people in our society, vitalizing the local economy, and educating the younger generation who will lead our future society.

Helping the Underprivileged

Taking care of the underprivileged neighbors is one of the famous social contributions of our company. Our employees and executives volunteer to give others warm hands, helping them get through their difficulties.

01) Payroll Giving

After its spinoff from Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2017, HCE made a partnership agreement with ChildFund Korea and the Bundang Regional Facility for the Handicapped to help the underprivileged people in our society. Through the partnership, the company began a payroll giving program where the employees willing to help the poor donate one percent of their paycheck. In 2020, the company founded the “1% Nanum Foundation”, encouraging employees to participate in payroll giving. The amount of donations from this program and the foundation is growing, allowing the company to help more people have hope.

02) Briquette Handouts

Since 2015, Hyundai Construction Equipment is holding a briquette handout volunteer event every winter, where the new employees engage in giving out blocks of briquette used as fuel for boilers or heating to the elders living alone and the unfortunate members of the community. Last November, 30 new employees visited the single seniors in Soi-myeon, Eumseong and handed out 6250 blocks of briquette. The briquettes donated during the event are purchased from the money raised from a fundraiser activity in which every member of the company participates, making it much more meaningful.

03) Charity Projects

HCE does various charity projects every year to help the poor neighbors in our society. An example would be a charity donation work where the company provides the neighbors living in low-income neighborhoods with rice and other necessities every season to ensure they have a proper meal. In 2020, the company manufactured one hundred silver cars and donated them to Dong-gu Office in Ulsan to help the seniors with mobility difficulties move more freely.

The company is working on several charity projects this year as well. In May, Hyundai Construction Equipment donated rice cakes to 280 low-income population and single seniors living in Handeul-maeul in Eumseong and Yangdong-maeul in Ulsan to commemorate Parents’ day. In April, the company and the Handeul-mauel residents planted corns on unused plots in HCE’s Eunseong plant. It is expected that the corns will have grown by this coming July, so the company plans to hold an event in which each family in Handeul-maeul gets a box full of corns and the company donates the rest to our partnered charity organizations. As you can see, HCE is not simply sharing its financial profits for social contribution. The company aims to share heartwarming experiences with our neighbors, making the community a better place to live.

Coexisting with the Local Community

Hyundai Construction Equipment is also dedicated to serve the local community and aims to coexist with its members.

01) Recovery Assistance after Disasters

HCE actively engages in recovery works in the regions where disasters such as floods, wildfires, and typhoons struck. After the great wildfire of 2019 in Goseong and Sokcho, Gangwon, the company provided five excavators to clear the debris of burnt homes, farmhouses, and barns. After the major floods in 2020 that affected the Chungcheong and Gyeonggi area, the company sent 12 excavators to help with the recovery works on submerged greenhouses and barns.

In this April, the company cooperated with Hyundai-Doosan Infracore and provided Uljin-gun, Ulsan with 20 excavators to assist in clearing the aftermath of a wildfire. In addition to the provision of construction equipment to the disaster areas, the company allocates budgets every year to prepare for recovery assistance, which expresses the company’s strong determination to serve the communities during difficult times.

02) Sponsoring Welfare Facilities

Hyundai Construction Equipment sponsors Somang Rehabilitation Center and Yegawon, the partner facilities for the handicapped in Seongnam. The company provides financial funds for events held by the facilities such as bazaars for helping the handicapped and charity nights to support their building financial independence. Furthermore, the employees and executives conduct fundraising activities to provide the facilities with the necessities and other goods. The company aims to expand its partnership and sponsorship to reach out to more people in need in the community.

03) Volunteer Work in Rural Communities

HCE is conducting campaigns and volunteer activities to assist the local economy struck by the COVID-19 pandemic. The company is on a campaign in which it encourages employees to purchase agricultural products from the local community and visits rural agricultural communities to help with their farming and harvest. In 2019, the company encouraged the company members to buy pepper powders and onions from Handeul-maeul and Yangdong-mauel to help farmers who are having financial difficulties from the pandemic, and 145 employees and executives visited rural communities for volunteer work to help with their farming. The company plans to reinforce these coexistence efforts by having every regional branch partner with a local community near the branch.

04) Blood Donation

Last February, Hyundai Construction Equipment, along with its affiliates and subsidiaries in Bundang and Ulsan area, entered a partnership for blood donation named “Partnership to Save Lives through Blood Donation” with Korea Red Cross Southern Seoul Blood Bank. Through this partnership, employees and executives from Hyundai Construction Equipment promised to donate blood regularly, more than twice a year. HCE hopes that the partnership could form an atmosphere where members of the company willingly donate their blood to overcome a national blood shortage.

The future of a company depends on whether it fulfills its social obligations and responsibilities. Hyundai Construction Equipment recognizes its social responsibilities and hopes to contribute to the improvement of the country and local communities as a global corporation. We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities by showing our love and care to our neighbors and sharing what we have earned with the community. HCE believes in the power of good, the power of benevolence.
